Wat Rong Khun – Awe-inspiring White Temple of Chiang Rai

Thailand is unlike anywhere else in the world. This exclusive country possesses a rich blend of colorful cultures, people, and a wide range of natural and man-made wonders that are worth visiting if you are on holiday in Thailand. The Thai tourist board slogan states ‘Amazing Thailand’ and the Land of Smiles truly deserves it, offering endless opportunities sure to dazzle and entice. One of these wonders for amazement is, no doubt, the magnificent Wat Rong Khun – the best Thai Buddhist temple almost entirely white, which embodies the purity of the Lord Buddha.

Wat Rong Khun or ‘the White Temple’ is a unique bizarre-looking building found near Chiang Rai Province in northern Thailand. Established on the vision of Chalermchai Kositpipat — a well-known Thai artist, aiming to create the replica of the magnificent and resplendent heaven, Wat Rong Khun really resembles a fairytale palace, dazzling both Thai and Western travelers.

The construction of the temple started in 1998 and it is still in process. When completed, Wat Rong Khun will have a total of nine structures fully ornate and decorated. To enter the temple there is a bridge where you’ll see a sea of demons, skulls and grasping hands, which represent the transition to that sacred place via hell.

The main temple building or the Phra Ubosot is decorated with fragments of reflective glass, which can be seen from afar. Inside of the temple, visitors will also find Buddhist symbolisms, ornate reliefs, paintings and murals that are very beautiful. A gable is decorated with a gable apex, a leaf-shaped gable edging that comes with the shapes of dragons and other mythical creatures entirely made of white succo. Do not miss out the nearby gallery exhibiting the artist’s paintings, as well as the souvenir shop, from where you can buy interesting presents to take home for your family.

To get to the temple is easy and traveling time from Chiang Mai is around 3 hours by bus or car. The temple is open daily from 06:30am to 18:00pm and there is no entrance fee, though donations are welcomed.

I am sure nobody would like to miss the magical view of the temple, because Wat Rong Khun is a real heaven on Earth to be seen to be believed!
